Realize that a startup puts you on an emotional rollercoaster unlike anything you have ever experienced. You will flip rapidly from a day in which you are euphorically convinced you are going to own the world, to a day in which doom seems only weeks away and you feel completely ruined, and back again. Over and over and over.

So after gallons of coffee and sacrifices to Elsbeth and my time together, BuyWithMe launches in New York. My favoite deal is the SPiN New York ping pong.  Half price with a free drink, I’m exhausted, but check it out: http://www.buywithme.com/sheckys/deals/365-spin-nyc-ping-pong

I love this note that’s included with your Gilt order—its a simple gestures, but that extra, unexpected something makes you feel good. Like when a friend sends a Thank You Card for hosting a dinner party. Another company that does a great job communicating with customers is Bonobos—you just gotta love the passion.

I love design, and yesterday I came across “The Light that Never Goes Out” by Frank Chimero (be sure to zoom in).
Travel around tech circles and people will inevitable touch on the idea of Great Design and Great User Experience. Though I hate boiling things to a single kerel, I think that in a way great design—especially in social technology—should strive to communicate a human message. In Chimero’s illustration, the message of labor, craft, and being awake in the dead of night is, I dare say, universal—perhaps only universal for those who’ve spend the night laboring on something. Like a good short story, I think design (& social technology) should strive for that human narrative. Yesterday I couldn’t get Chimero’s design out of my head, so at 6 AM I awoke and started imitating it in order to better undersand (we all should know how imitation [link to video of Neuroscientist Dr. Ramachandran] separates us from animals).
I got so far as perfecting the window and then got hungry, so I made myself coffee (see image below).

Tony Hsieh, C.E.O. of Zappos, on Company Values, Hiring, and the Weirdness Scale.

Interviewer:
If you could ask only one or two questions to get a sense of a person, what would they be?
Tony Hsieh:
“If you had to name something, what would you say is the biggest misperception that people have of you?” Then the follow-up question I usually ask is, “What’s the difference between misperception and perception?” After all, perception is perception.
Interviewer:
What are you trying to discover with those questions?
Tony Hsieh:
I think it’s a combination of how self-aware people are and how honest they are. I think if someone is self-aware, then they can always continue to grow. If they’re not self-aware, I think it’s harder for them to evolve or adapt beyond who they already are.
Me:
Sadly not enough people possess self-awareness...having said that, one might possess David-Foster-Wallace, consider-the-lobster hyper-awareness syndrome.

Xmas Day in Weston and Hong Kong. Via the magic of Skype, my older brother and his family were able to take part in opening presents. It was really fun and great to see everyone’s reactions.

Next year, I plan to position 4 laptops around our living room and connect them via 4 different Skype accounts to my brother’s 4 laptops so that we have a more realistic, “immersive” experience. Now that will be killer!
