I love design, and yesterday I came across “The Light that Never Goes Out” by Frank Chimero (be sure to zoom in).
Travel around tech circles and people will inevitable touch on the idea of Great Design and Great User Experience. Though I hate boiling things to a single kerel, I think that in a way great design—especially in social technology—should strive to communicate a human message. In Chimero’s illustration, the message of labor, craft, and being awake in the dead of night is, I dare say, universal—perhaps only universal for those who’ve spend the night laboring on something. Like a good short story, I think design (& social technology) should strive for that human narrative. Yesterday I couldn’t get Chimero’s design out of my head, so at 6 AM I awoke and started imitating it in order to better undersand (we all should know how imitation [link to video of Neuroscientist Dr. Ramachandran] separates us from animals).
I got so far as perfecting the window and then got hungry, so I made myself coffee (see image below).

While searching for iPhone wireframes, I came across this iPhone Stencil Kit by Design Commission. I love the idea of a simple tool being used to create a complex application. Nothing simplifies the development process more than a tool that reigns the imagination. Think of the spreadsheet. Think of the hammer.
