Heeling in a Conversation
ME: Yesterday Elsbeth took delivery of asparagus roots. They are heeling in and will be ready to harvest in three years. I prefer the immediate return from sowing sorrel or arugula seeds onto steaming manure.
PROF. WEEDIN: The OED is open next to the computer, and I don't think any of its definitions of "heel" can quite be what Elsbeth's asparagus is doing; probably I need a gardener's glossary. Anyway, whatever asparagus is doing is laudable.
OED: To move the heel, tap or touch the ground with it in a rhythmical manner in dancing.
OED: To arm (a game-cock) with a gaff or spur.
OED: Of a ship: To incline or lean to one side, as when canted by the wind or unevenly loaded. Also of other things. [This, I believe, to be the etymology]
ALBERT D. TAYLOR: There are a few important points in connection with the operation of heeling-in stock which should be clearly understood. Trees and shrubs, when heeled-in over winter, should be leaned to the north so that the low winter sun may not shine directly into the tops nor so readily melt the frozen ground about the stems. Thus they are protected better from freezing and thawing of the ground and from premature starting of the buds in the spring.
PROF. WEEDIN: John sawed some holes into some of the planks in the garden's fence. And at certain times of the year, when the sun shines on and through the short projecting wall that conceals my compost tumbler, it throws onto the back fence masses of shadow holding holes of sun within. My own private little Stonehenge.

This brings tears to the eyes… crowdsproutjon: When I saw this, I thought—how encouraging is it to still be mentioned by the leader in business ideas?  Well, there’s still a lot of work that needs to be done to make CrowdSprout grow, but it feels good to be recognized! Thanks Trendwatching.com Here’s their take: http://trendwatching.com/briefing/ “By now, virtually everyone has chimed...
